Kidney diseases are the 5th leading cause of death in Suriname, according to the WHO 2017 report on World Health rankings. It is therefore important that regular dialysis is taking place for persons with kidney diseases. While there are several dialysis centers in Suriname, they all focus on the treatment of adults with kidney diseases. However, there are children as well with kidney diseases, but unfortunately there is no dedicated dialysis center in Suriname equipped to perform paediatric dialysis. Based on this need, the Diakonessen Hospital presented a proposal to the Bank for funding the set-up of a kidney dialyses center for children.

The project was approved as part of the Bank’s corporate social responsibility program The Power to Make A Difference. The Bank strongly believes that the quality of health care for children with kidney diseases will be significantly improved. “The Republic Bank’s Power to Make a Difference Programme has funded many worthwhile projects over the years, and this will rank very high in terms of impact, as a major transformation in the quality of healthcare to children with kidney diseases is expected”, says Sean Husain, Managing Director, during the launch of the project. The launch of the project took place this morning at the Courtyard by Marriott hotel in attendance of several representatives.

Dr. Keenswijk, paediatrician nephrologist at the Diakonessen Hospital, is the project manager who spearheaded the initiative. He shared in his presentation the necessity of adequate dialysis possibilities for children, as well as the need for this specialized care and the future plans of this center. The Diakonessen Hospital is more than grateful for this donation, as it will be of great significance for our community.

With a symbolic hand over of a token by Mr. Husain to Dr. Keenswijk, the project was formally launched. The project will be executed over the next six-months and the Bank’s partnership with the Diakonessen Hospital, where the Center will be located, is premised on the Hospital providing a building to house the Center, while the bank will be fully funding the equipment, its installation, supplies and training, at a cost of USD 131,000.
